Oh, how we have waited and waited for this new little fella. Did you know that this is only the fourth generation model of the Suzuki Jimny? It launched back in 1970 with the LJ10, but for me, it was the third generation that stole my heart, the one which launched in 1998. Gosh, how I longed for one.
But now, here we are with this new guy and I have to say, I think I like it. This new model looks a lot more 4X4-ish, if you know what I mean? “Butch” is another word I could use. And from the pics I have seen, the interior looks pretty smashing too.
A side note: I am not at the Johannesburg Motor Show, unfortunately. Instead I will be gracing SABC 3 with my presence on Afternoon Express this afternoon. I mention this because 1: the Jimny was launched at the motor show today and 2: I want you all to know I will be on tv today.
Back to the new Suzuki Jimny, it boasts a new engine, a 1.5-litre which replaces the outgoing 1.3-litre and now uses 14% less fuel. You can opt for a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission in the GLX model. All Jimny models are fitted with a 4X4 system called AllGrip Pro which allows you to switch between 4×2 (front-wheel drive), 4×4 high and 4×4 low range with a secondary gear lever. This system is supported by both the vehicle stability control (ESP) and a new Brake-enabled Limited Slip Differential system. With a ground clearance of 210 mm you really can take this little bugger anywhere.
Both the GA and GLX models will have a full-sized spare wheel, ABS brakes, brake assist (BAS), electronic stability control (ESP), ISOFIX anchors for child seats and dual SRS front airbags. The GLX model include features such as a leather-covered multi-function steering wheel, electric windows, colour coded door handles and mirrors, 15” alloy wheels, LED projector headlamps, remote keyless access with central locking, a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity and Bluetooth hands-free operation and cruise control. Talk about jam-packed!
Pricing for the Suzuki Jimny is not yet confirmed but Suzuki estimates it to be:
Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4×4 GA Manual: R265 000 (estimated)
Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4×4 GLX Manual: R300 000 (estimated)
Suzuki Jimny 1.5 4×4 GLX Auto: R320 000 (estimated)
The all-new Suzuki Jimny will be available to customers from 1 November.
Stay tuned for my driving impression…which will only happen once I have actually driven it. I shall keep you posted, shall I?
